With cities still shut down across the world due to the never-ending pandemic, somehow or another NYC is still going strong... well, sort of. Things are definitely different having to sit outside and freeze your a$$ off for some overpriced wine but it's the safest option for now and helps keep businesses alive during this struggle. So, cheers to overhead heaters & outdoor dining; here is where I visited this weekend. 🥂
Jack's Wife Freda
I've only been to this restaurant once before, so getting the chance to go this weekend again, I was super excited. Jack's Wife Freda's menu consists of Israeli and South African cuisine with a handful of American classics which makes it a great option for literally anyone and everyone. Please read this restaurant's About Page on how they came up with the name- it's super sweet!
A little fun fact about me is that I also loveloveloveeee middle eastern food. When eating it, I appreciate that I can usually find a healthy option without having to sacrifice taste and flavor because whatever spices are native to the Middle East are beyond yummy. Specifically, at JWF's they have great options AND reasonable prices.
This is what Kevin & I picked out from the menu this weekend:
Apps
This picture says it all but this is what Kevin and I had...

Salt & Pepper Eggplant- This simple-flavored eggplant balanced great with the refreshing tzatziki sauce that came with it. Not only was it yummy but it's an easy app to share between a couple of people.
Kefta Kebab- Highly recommend. The meatballs (which were a combination of lamb, beef, spices) was sooo sooo flavorful. This app also came in a tahini sauce with Peta bread on the side- perfect for scooping up every last bit of that sauce. I could have eaten the sauce with a spoon, it was so good. Gross but true.
Main
I had to just think for a minute what Kevin got as his main because I was so focused on mine, I couldn't remember his. Lol.

Green Shakshuka- I am proud to say that I pronounced this dish correctly when ordering it...or the waiter was just being nice, idk. This is the only main I've tried out of the 2 times I've been at Freda's because why mess up a good thing? The first time I decided to get this dish was because I was snooping at the table next to me, saw another girl eating this and just had to find out what it was-not creepy at all. I honestly can't put into words how this main tastes because I'm not used to eating these flavors but it's a must-try! So good.
Kev got the Mediterranean Breakfast and I'm assuming he really enjoyed it because he ate all of it- except the sliced avocado, which I ate. :)
Jack's Wife Freda actually has 3 locations around Manhattan: Soho, West Village, & Chelsea. When Kev & I went, we chose the West Village location and loved it. We both felt safe sitting outdoors, as well. This location has a pretty flower-covered enclosure with overhead heaters to keep you toasty while you dine. I'm pretty sure the other two locations have larger seating areas but you'll just have to check it out for yourself!
If you're like me, you'll probably want to stalk the Instagram, so I've linked it here.
xoxo,
Han
